Lakeshore Asylum Cemetery Project

When Lakeshore Psychiatric Hospital closed its doors on September 1, 1979, its historic buildings, originally built by patient labour, were abandoned and begun to deteriorate. Over the years, they were even threatened with complete demolition and redevelopment. Fortunately, the province of Ontario finally recognized the historical significance of the site and designated it as a heritage property in 1988.

While the hospital's buildings have been restored and converted to accommodate the needs of the expanding community, the Lakeshore Psychiatric Hospital Cemetery has been completely forgotten and abandoned by the provincial government for many years.

Lakeshore Psychiatric Hospital Cemetery Restoration Project is an attempt originated by an active group of community activists to restore and preserve the cemetery. Our group consists of some post-secondary students, Ed Janiszewski, Prof. Geoffrey Reaume, Don Weitz, Graeme Bacque, psychiatric survivors, and others. Together, we have so far organized such events as the Restoration Day (which took place on May 21, 2005), the LSPH Cemetery March (July 5), and the Flower Power Event (July 21).

If you'd like to get involved in any way, please visit Lakeshore Asylum Cemetery Project.
