Lakeshore Asylum Cemetery Project

When Lakeshore Psychiatric Hospital officially closed its doors on September 1, 1979, its historic buildings, originally built by patients, were abandoned and began to deteriorate. Over the years, they were even threatened with complete demolition and redevelopment. Fortunately, the Government of Ontario finally recognized the historical significance of the site and designated it as a heritage property under the Ontario Heritage Act in 1988.

While the historic buildings of the former hospital have been restored and converted to accommodate the needs of the expanding community, the Lakeshore Psychiatric Hospital Cemetery has been completely forgotten and abandoned by the provincial government for many years.

Lakeshore Asylum Cemetery Project is an attempt originated by an active group of community activists to restore and preserve the cemetery. Together, we have so far organized such various events since our inception, first beginning with the Restoration Day, which took place on May 21, 2005, and the latest being the annual Spring Visit and Clean Up on Saturday, May 2nd, 2009.
